The Rose-breasted Grosbeak is a widespread migratory songbird in the cardinal family that is found in much of eastern and central North America during the breeding season, and in Central and northern South America during the winter. This species feeds mainly on insects, seeds, fruit, and berries. A beautiful singer, its numbers have declined by about 40% over the last 50 years, mainly due to habitat loss. Clean forest practices (which see dead and smaller trees removed to provide a clean forest floor with established larger trees) may also affect the Rose-breasted Grosbeak, as it nests in smaller trees.
