This magnificent bird, the Resplendent Quetzal is currently the most sought-after bird by birdwatchers in much of its range, just as it was previously revered in Mesoamerican mythology. The Aztec Quetzalcoatl, and the Mayan Kukulkan and Gukumatz were feathered-serpent gods, according to myth, which exhibited the long plumes of the quetzal. A large trogon that resides mainly in higher elevation cloud forests from southern Mexico to Panama, it feeds mainly on fruit, including small, wild avocados, but will also take small animals as prey. It is a cavity nester, and both parents incubate the eggs. Only the male bird has the very long tail plumes, which can measure up to 26 inches in length. The Resplendent Quetzal is the national bird of Guatemala, and the quetzal is the currency of the country, as well. It is threatened by habitat loss, as it breeds in very particular habitat which is very vulnerable to deforestation.
