Adult Red-tailed Hawk T-shirt

A very widespread hawk of North America, Mexico, Central America to Panama, and parts of the Caribbean, the Red-tailed Hawk is a very diverse Buteo that can vary greatly in plumage and size, depending on regional subspecies. Often perched conspicuously or circling in flight, searching for prey, this hawk feeds primarily on larger rodents like squirrels and rabbits, but it will also take small rodents, some birds, reptiles, occasionally fish, and it will settle for carrion. There are some features that generally work to identify this species, regardless of subspecies, such as the dark patagials at the front edge of the wing and the bellyband, as well as pale scapulars (not always applicable) and the brick-red (adult, though not applicable on some subspecies, such as Harlan's) and thinly-banded (juvenile) tail. Though not highly-migratory, members of some subspecies shift their range south for the winter. Pictured is typical dark morph western/northern bird of the Calarus/Abieticola subspecies.
