Adult Prothonotary Warbler T-shirt

Colloquially known as "Swamp Gold" (and "yema de huevo" meaning "egg yolk" in Spanish), the Prothonotary Warbler is a bright yellow warbler that breeds in swamps and wetland forest in eastern and central North America, and winters in Central and northern South America. It is a cavity nester, and the male scouts several nesting sites, and begins building the nest in each dead tree cavity, and then courts the female, who, if she approves of his nesting locations, will select the ideal cavity of those he marked, and build the rest of the nest. This species has seen a 40% decline in population over the last fifty or sixty years. One of our goals is to build hundreds of biodegradable nesting boxes that look like natural cavities in dead branches, tree burl, termite nests, which we have seen work for these warblers and for trogons in Tropical America, and place them strategically to help combat the habitat loss afflicting breeding Prothonotary Warblers.
