One of two oriole species commonly found in much of the eastern half of North America, the Orchard Oriole male has a similar color pattern to his counterpart of the other expected species, the Baltimore Oriole, but instead of bright orange, he has a deep red maroon-chestnut color on his underside. The Orchard Oriole mainly feeds on insects and other small invertebrates, as well as fruit and nectar. It winters in Mexico, Central, and northwestern South America. Populations have steadily declined at a slow rate for the last 50 years or so, but not enough to consider the species threatened, and it is quite numerous in much of its range.
