The Loggerhead Sea Turtle is the second largest species of marine turtle, after the Leatherback, and it has a very large global distribution, but it is vulnerable overall, with many populations endangered. As with the overwhelming majority of species of plants and animals that are declining in numbers, human activity is directly or indirectly responsible for this predicament. The Loggerhead was once hunted worldwide for meat and eggs, and though this practice has been outlawed in some countries, in others, it has not. But the threat caused by ocean pollution has taken over as a primary cause for recent sharp declines in many areas.
