The American White Oak (Quercus alba) is one of the mightiest trees found in eastern parts of the United States and parts of southeastern Canada, and countless animal species and epiphytes (plants, fungi, and others) depend on it for survival. Its wood is also perhaps the most desirable for fine building projects of any widespread and common tree in its range, which has made it historically very vulnerable to logging, which continues to this day. Its quality lumber is not the only motive for its removal from our forests; conversion of forest to farmland, and the destruction of forests to make way for development projects might see tens of thousands of oaks removed for a single subdivision or large commercial complex. The replanting of seeds and seedlings of this tree, as well as of other oak trees and other hardwoods is a top priority of ours, as the white oak is an absolute pillar of North American woodlands.
