The Violet Sabrewing is a beautiful, large hummingbird that is found from southern Mexico to Panama. It is very territorial, and principally occupies high and mid-elevation cloud forests, but generally feeds in lower levels of the forest, and in patches of riparian habitat. Heliconias and non-native banana flowers are key food sources to this unique bird, whose forested range is imperiled by deforestation due to logging and conversion of forest to open spaces, such as open sun plantations, farmland, and land for development.
