Quercus copeyensis is a tree of the white oak section of oaks that is found in high altitude cloud forests in southern Costa Rica and northwestern Panama. Little is known about this majestic species, which is often thickly covered in mosses, lichens, ferns, and bromeliads, and is frequently adorned, as a pillar of its habitat, by such avian wonders as toucanets and trogons, such as the Resplendent Quetzal. It is imperiled by its very limited habitat and the high value of oak in general, which makes this tree coveted by loggers. The felling of a single long-lived specimen will destroy prime habitat for thousands of animal and plant species that depend on it.
