The Summer Tanager is one of the three widespread Piranga species that occurs in the United States (though two additional species occur in limited parts of the southwest). Formerly, species of this genus were classified within the very large true-tanager family of the American tropics, Thraupidae, but they have been reclassified, and are now considered part of the cardinal family. The Summer Tanager is a migratory songbird, like the two other common species found in North America, and it mainly breeds in the central and southeastern US, though it frequently wanders, and it spends winters in southern Florida, and from Mexico south, through Central to northwestern South America.
