The Lazuli Bunting is one of four species of buntings with a widespread North American distribution (Indigo Bunting, Painted Bunting, and Blue Grosbeak are the others. Varied Bunting of the same genus, Passerina, as the previous four, and Blue Bunting of a different genus have very limited distribution north of Mexico). Breeding in much of the western US and southwestern Canada, and wintering mostly in southern Arizona part of western Mexico, the male Lazuli Bunting is sky blue (not the deep blue suggested by the color of the stone in its name) with an orangish breast and pale belly and underside, to the undertail coverts. Females are duller brown. An insect and seed eater, this species relies on brushland near forest and wooded hills and riparian habitat, even in the desert.
