The Jaguar is one of five big cats of the genus Panthera, and the only species of these that is native in the Americas. Very similarly-patterned to the slightly smaller leopard of Africa and Asia, it is usually yellowish with black spots, though they are the only two big cats that can occasionally have a darker morph of melanistic individuals, known colloquially as black panthers. The Jaguar is the third largest cat species on average, after the tiger (largest), and lion (second largest). Near threatened by habitat loss, the Jaguar's range has been greatly cut by human activity, and this feline is now virtually absent from the southwestern US, most of northern and central Mexico, and most of South America outside of the densest forest, though it once occupied virtually all of this swath of land.
