The Jabiru is a very large stork that is found from the Gulf coast of Mexico south, through South America's Pantanal to Argentina. It has been seen in Texas, and on some very limited occasions in other parts of the United States. This tremendous bird's wingspan can reach over 9 ft, and it can reach a standing height of 55 in, and a weight of nearly 20 lbs. It is an opportunistic feeder, that feeds on just about anything it can catch or find (such as fish, amphibians, small reptiles, rodents, mollusks, and carrion). The Jabiru's name comes from the indigenous South American Tupian language for "swollen neck," and it was revered in mythology by several different native peoples. Though not endangered, it is not common anywhere.
