Kids Ivory-billed Woodpecker T-shirt

Known as the Grail Bird (a name memorialized in Tim Gallagher's book about it), the Ivory-billed Woodpecker was a large crested woodpecker of the southeastern United States that was last seen in 2004, and is likely extinct. This species serves as a reminder that human impacts can completely destroy species in just decades, by even slightly altering its preferred habitat. Destruction of forest in the late1800s pushed this magnificent bird into patches of forest that remained intact, and in the early 1900s, deforestation accelerated even more, pushing this species closer to extinction. It is the same terrible fate that befell the Ivory-billed Woodpecker's much larger cousin, the Imperial Woodpecker, once the largest woodpecker in the world, but now, extinct, in western Mexico around the same time.
