The largest woodpecker on earth during its time, the Imperial Woodpecker is considered recently extinct. It occupied the pine-oak forests of Mexico's Sierra Madre Occidental mountains, and was completely destroyed by human activity. Though this species relied on dead or partially dead trees for sustenance and nesting, loggers over the last couple of centuries believed that it damaged healthy trees, and enacted a campaign to poison the Imperial Woodpecker, thinking it monetarily damaged their endeavors in the lumber industry. Though this may have damaged localized populations of this majestic bird, it was the logging itself that caused the deforestation necessary to eliminate this species altogether, and in very short order. No better example exists to demonstrate how detrimental human activity, particularly deforestation and pollution, is to flora and fauna.
