The Groove-billed Ani is a member of the cuckoo family that is found from southern Texas south, through much of Mexico and Central America, to northern and western South America. An entirely black bird that superficially resembles a grackle or blackbird from afar, it feeds on insects, fruit, and seeds, and is often found along forest edges, in shrubby woodland, and along pastures. Though nonmigratory overall, the northernmost mainly leave Texas and northern Mexico in the coldest parts of the year, retreating south to warmer climate.
