The Blue-throated Hillstar is a remarkably-beautiful hummingbird with an EXTREMELY limited range, found exclusively in a patch of shrubland encompassing a few square miles above the timberline (called Páramo) around a single mountain (Cerro de Arcos) in the Andes of southwestern Ecuador. Discovered just a few years ago, it is constantly-imperiled by its tiny habitat, any destruction of which, for mining or any other cause, may extinguish the beauty of this rare gem forever.
