The Anhinga is one of four species of extant darters of the genus which bears its name, and the only one found in the Americas (the others are found in Africa, Asia, and Australia and Oceania). The Anhinga is limited to Atlantic and Gulf coasts of the United States (rarely found more than a couple hundred miles inland), but it occupies much of the vast Amazon rainforest, and though it has wide distribution, it sparsely populates its ideal habitat. It, like other darters, is a very efficient fisher, and relies on its underwater agility to spear fish.
