Bothrops asper is a common and widespread venomous pit viper that is found from Mexico south, through most types of lowland and midlevel habitat, to northern South America. English speakers generally use a common name that comes from the French for spearhead or lancehead, "fer-de-lance," to refer to this species, due to its very typical pit viper thin neck and arrow head characteristic. In much of its range, it is referred to as "terciopelo" by Spanish speaking locals, which means "velvet." Though highly venomous, modern antivenom has made its bite almost universally survivable, if administered correctly. An opportunistic feeder, this snake preys upon insects and other small invertebrates, small birds, lizards, amphibians, and small mammals, particularly rodents, which it ambushes, assisted by its incredible camouflage.
