The Common Loon is a thick-billed loon with an eerie call that breeds in the northern United States and Canada, and winters along the coasts further south (though it can be found virtually anywhere inland, migrating between the coasts and its northern inland breeding habitat around forested lakes). Also known as the great northern diver, it is also found in Europe, and throughout its range, the Common Loon depends primarily on fish for sustenance, but will also take other aquatic creatures. Pairs are monogamous, and parents are often seen shuttling chicks around on their back. Though stable, habitat destruction poses a threat to this bird.
