The Common Black Hawk is a species of the Buteogallus genus that is found from the southwestern United States to northern South America. It is very broad-winged and stubby-tailed, with long yellow legs, and the adult is mostly black with a white tail band, but the juvenile is white, brown, gray, and black, and covered in streaks, making identification a challenge, as it superficially resembles other species based on plumage, though form can be diagnostic. An opportunistic feeder, it often preys on crabs closer to the coast, and is called the crab-eating hawk (gavilán cangrejero) in Spanish.
