We have personally lost a sound of spring and summer. In just the last decade or two, we have almost completely stopped hearing the once-widespread and recognizable buzzy trill of the Cerulean Warbler in woodlands of eastern North America. In just the last 30-35 years, its population numbers have been cut by almost 75%, due to habitat loss in the northern breeding grounds, along migratory routes, and in the parts of Central and northern South America where it winters. Deforestation due to human intrusion into nature is the culprit in North America, and the large scale conversion of shade-grown coffee plantations and other forest to open air coffee and pineapple farms, as well as to farmland in general (which sees rapid deforestation) is destroying this warbler at an alarming and accelerating pace, just as it is destroying many other species of plants and animals. We plan to use proceeds from our sales to sponsor vigorous replanting, and curb this problem as best as we can.
