One of two widespread species of cuckoo in eastern and central North America (together with the Yellow-billed Cuckoo, as Mangrove Cuckoo is restricted to very particular habitat and not found in the interior), the Black-billed Cuckoo has declined by about 70% over the last half century. Habitat loss in North, Central (where it is found as a passage migrant) and northwestern South America (where it winters) is likely to cause this insectivore to lose half of its remaining population in the coming 30 years. Insecticides, as it relies heavily on caterpillars for sustenance, also play a role in the Black-billed Cuckoo's decline.
