The Belted Kingfisher is the only widespread kingfisher found in North America (though Ringed and Amazon are found in parts of the southwest). Like the vast majority of our bird species, it has declined in recent decades, with numbers decreasing by over 50% over the last 40-50 years. They feed mainly on fish, and dive headfirst into the water to snatch them from a perch after spotting ideal prey, but they will also take crustaceans, mollusks, amphibians and small reptiles, and even some fruit. Human encroachment may cause them to vacate ideal habitat.
