The American Harpy Eagle is a very large eagle that is named for human-bird raptors of classical mythology that would swoop down to snatch people away in flight (as is a similar raptor, the Papuan Harpy Eagle). American Harpy Eagles exhibit similar behavior, snatching sloths, monkeys, and other prey, mostly mammals, and often from trees. This near-threatened species is the third largest Eagle on average in body size and weight, after the Steller's Sea Eagle and the Philippine Eagle, and it is found from southern Mexico south, through most of the Amazon rainforest. It has been and continues to be impacted by habitat loss, caused by deforestation and human encroachment.
